A guide to enterprise green building certifications

Enterprise Green Communities is a valuable rating system for housing projects that serve affordable housing communities. Many state housing authorities, foundations and local governments reference it as a standard required for funding to support housing development.

Keeping with the times, the Enterprise Foundation, which develops the Green Communities standard, issues updates to the rating system. Updates extend performance metrics beyond code minimums, support broader industry initiatives for transparency and reduced carbon emissions, support integrated design, community connectivity, mobility and wellness – among other topics. With each new update, project teams are challenged to stretch and create new strategies that achieve higher performance buildings.

Effective the date of this letter, Enterprise Green Communities v2020 is the new standard for any project seeking certification through Enterprise. This version of the rating system is different in some ways from version 2015, including a few key areas:

  • Focusing on NetZero planning and flexible HVAC design
  • Rewarding material transparency and reporting
  • Improving connective communities with mobility strategies
  • Embedding resiliency in the building design
  • Minimizing site disturbance and improving site planning and design
